After watching the Hamlet clips, I noticed the elements used in the scene to bring life to the famous "To be or not to be" speech. In each scene the actor playing Hamlet is alone and therefor comfortable to speak his mind. Even Ethan Hawk's Hamlet where he is in Blockbuster, but still alone. Overall, I think the location of where they spoke was a good choice because it showed their loneliness.
In Branaugh's Hamlet it looked like Hamlet was in his own home talking to himself in the mirror. It showed that they only person he could tell what he was thinking was himself. Olivier's Hamlet was definitely my favorite because Hamlet was sitting on a rock on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The ocean in my opinion was a symbol of stillness and escaping reality. Also the music was another reason why I liked the clip.
Music can make or break a scene in a play, movie, or show. Olivier's and Almereyda's Hamlet showed how music emphasizes the emotion the character is going through. Unlike the two others were just silent and it made it seem the characters felt nothingness. The music in the two clips showed what feelings the characters felt. In Olivier's Hamlet the music was grim and angry. That made the scene make more sense because you can interpret the emotions he's feeling. Also in the Almereyda's clip where the music was an eerie undertone, showing Hamlet in a vindictive mood where he is obviously depressed. I enjoyed the Hamlet clips and now I wish I could've scene Jude Law's Hamlet.

Nelson, it's interesting to me how different these versions can be and yet they all convey some of the integral parts of this speech in their own ways. I like how you talked about the loneliness in these scenes, because this is such a key piece to Hamlet, the character. He is so terribly lonely and without anyone/thing to trust.
ReplyDeleteI also liked your reflection on the music in each scene. Keep this in mind when you consider your final assessment. And I WISH we could have seen the play on Broadway! It is such an experience to see a play live and to experience it with an audience (as you may have heard on the video). Plus, it is so thrilling to see actors you know live. Live or not, though I have to say this version was chilling it was so good!

ReplyDeleteIn all honesty this post was good. You were very unique in mentioning the music. I don't think anyone else involved that in their responses. You put much original detail in this and made it agreeable.
Nelson this was a good summary of every clip and think that you made some very good points. I like how you mentioned the scenery about all of them and how the music in one of the made the music made the whole scene. Good Job.
